Intake
  Most juveniles enter the juvenile justice system at the Intake level. Juveniles alleged to have committed a criminal offense or who have been truant from school are required to appear with their parents for an intake conference at the Juvenile Probation Department. Juveniles who have committed a serious crime requiring detention are sent directly to the Youth Center or a shelter facility. The Intake officers decide which cases are referred to Court for a formal Court hearing and which cases can be handled informally.
